Balancing Life and Your Child’s Therapy: Tips for Busy Parents

A new school year is starting, and families are in the process of adjusting to new schedules.

Do you ever feel like you can’t take on one more commitment? I’ve been there.

So, here are some tips to help you prioritize your child’s therapy in this time of transition:

· Find a clinic or therapist that fits with your schedule and your child’s rhythm

o Consistent attendance is key to get the most benefit from services, so be honest about what you can and what you cannot do

· Arrive prepared with any questions, concerns, etc. and bring them up at the beginning of the session

o There may not be time for the clinician to address your concerns, etc. at the end of the session, so don’t be afraid to jump in with questions right away

· Commit to completing one or two carry over tasks at home in-between therapy sessions

o Just ten minutes of targeted tasks a day promotes new learning, so stay consistent, and when things aren’t going well tell the therapist so troubleshooting can occur

· If you don’t regularly interact with your child’s therapist make time once a month to check in

o If your child gets speech therapy in school or another family member takes them to therapy sessions then email or call regularly to find out how you can promote what’s happening in speech therapy at home
